A healthy diet plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall well-being of our furry companions. Just like humans, dogs can benefit from specific nutrients that support their brain health and cognitive function. In this article, we will explore the concept of "brain food" for dogs and discuss some essential nutrients and dietary considerations to optimise their mental abilities.

Omega-3 for brain development

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are known for their significant role in brain function. Omega-3s possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help protect brain cells, improve neural connections, and enhance cognitive abilities in dogs. DHA is especially important because it plays a vital role in brain and retinal development in young puppies. Scores of scientific studies in a variety of species support the long-held hypothesis that DHA is essential for learning and trainability. One such study is on 48 beagle puppies fed foods fortified with DHA-rich fish oil from 8 to 52 weeks of age. The result of the study is published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and it supports the hypothesis that feeding foods rich in nutrients that enhance neurologic development (DHA, vitamin E, and taurine) results in improved outcomes of various tests for discrimination learning and psychomotor ability.

DHA and EPA are abundant in oily fish like salmon, sardines, herring, and mackerel. Including fish oil supplements in your dog's diet can provide a convenient and concentrated source of these beneficial fatty acids. There are many good omega-3 supplements available in the market today. While both EPA and DHA are beneficial, you may want to consider the unique properties of each to address different aspects of health. EPA has anti-inflammatory effects while DHA is known for boosting brain health. If your goal is to dampen or prevent inflammation - joint aches, pain, swelling - then standard fish oils supplements for pets will do just fine. However, if you want to improve your pup’s brain function, then consider a fish oil with a higher ratio of DHA like this Zeal New Zealand Hoki Fish Oil Dog Supplement.

Probiotics for mood and function

Probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that support the digestive system, have been shown to offer various health benefits for dogs. Probiotics can positively influence the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system between the gut and the brain. This connection suggests that a healthy gut environment may have indirect effects on neural development and cognitive function. Some studies in other animal species and humans have demonstrated links between gut microbiota and brain health, showing potential benefits for conditions like anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline. While the research on the gut-brain axis of dogs specifically is limited, there are indications that probiotics may have some positive effects on canine cognitive function.

Probiotics have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and reducing overall inflammation in the body may indirectly benefit the brain. Chronic inflammation has been associated with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. By promoting a balanced gut microbiota, thereby reducing systemic inflammation, probiotics may contribute to overall brain health in dogs.

When it comes to adding probiotics to a dog's diet, there are several options to consider. Here are some of the most common and effective ways to incorporate probiotics into your dog's routine.

Probiotic supplements

Probiotic supplements designed specifically for dogs are widely available in the form of capsules, tablets, or powders. These products contain concentrated amounts of beneficial bacteria. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding dosage and administration. Here’s a highly rated probiotic supplements that helps to support a healthy digestive system, immune system and has added antioxidants - LactoGold Probiotic Powder for Dogs & Cats.

Probiotic-rich foods

Certain foods naturally contain probiotics and can be added to your dog's diet. Yogurt, for example, contains live bacteria cultures that offer probiotic benefits. Ensure that the yogurt is plain, unsweetened, and free from additives like artificial sweeteners, as these can be harmful to dogs.

Another probiotic-rich fermented food that you should consider adding to your pup’s diet is kefir. Kefir is also a fermented milk drink but is believed to contain more probiotics than yogurt! Kefir is lower in lactose than yogurt and is especially beneficial for dogs who are sensitive to lactose. For easy feeding, try this freeze-dried kefir powder - Nurture Pro Kefir 118 Probiotics + Plant Enzymes Freeze-Dried Powder For Dogs & Cats. It’s made with 100% natural Kefir, Kefir 118 contains probiotic strains and fermented plant enzymes that provide an all-natural boost for your pet's gut and overall health.

If you have a fussy eater, we would strongly recommend that you get a Try & Buy trial pack before making a full purchase. Do introduce these foods gradually and in moderation to assess your dog's tolerance.

Probiotic dog treats

There are commercially available dog treats fortified with probiotics. These treats are a convenient and enjoyable way to provide your dog with the benefits of probiotics while also serving as a reward or snack. One such functional treat is The Honest Kitchen Daily Boost Instant Goat's Milk With Probiotics For Dogs. It’s made from highly-digestible dehydrated goat’s milk plus 5 billion active probiotics and can be served alone as a snack or poured over to hydrate your pup’s dry dog food.

Prebiotic foods

Prebiotics are types of dietary fibres that provide nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria. Including prebiotic-rich foods in your dog's diet can support the growth and activity of probiotics. Some examples of prebiotic foods suitable for dogs include sweet potatoes, bananas, and asparagus. Incorporate these foods gradually to prevent digestive upset, and adjust portion sizes based on your dog's individual needs.

Medium-chain triglycerides to prevent cognitive decline

Medium-chain triglycerides are a type of fat that can be easily metabolised by the body for a quick source of energy. MCTs are derived from sources like coconut oil and can have a positive impact on brain health. Studies have suggested that MCTs may aid in the management of cognitive decline in ageing dogs and can be particularly beneficial for dogs with certain neurological conditions. Other studies have shown that consumption of MCT can improve seizure control, reduce behavioural comorbidities and improve cognitive function in epileptic dogs. However, the exact metabolic pathways affected by dietary MCT remain poorly understood and more studies are still required.

Antioxidants to protect brain cells

Antioxidants are compounds that combat oxidative stress and help protect brain cells from damage caused by free radicals. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries, spinach, kale, and carrots, can contribute positively to your dog's cognitive health. These nutrient-packed ingredients can be incorporated into dog’s meals or given as healthy treats. Antioxidant-rich diets have been linked to improved memory and learning abilities in dogs, promoting their mental agility and overall brain function.

When it comes to obtaining antioxidants naturally from food, the optimal approach is to feed your dog a fresh diet comprising of fresh ingredients. Opting for raw or gently cooked diets is particularly beneficial as they preserve a majority of the natural antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals due to their low heat processing methods. For instance, The Grateful Pet Cooked Dog Food (Salmon & Sardine) is an excellent choice. It contains omega-3 rich fishes and an array of antioxidant-rich ingredients like fresh spinach, pumpkin, blueberries, wolfberries, and more. Such a diet can greatly benefit your pup's brain health and overall mental well-being.

Brain Food For Dogs

While providing a well-balanced diet is crucial for a dog's overall health, incorporating specific brain foods can support their cognitive abilities and enhance their mental well-being. Including omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, probiotics, prebiotics, and medium-chain triglycerides in your dog's diet can contribute to optimal brain function and promote a sharp and agile mind. As always, it's important to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best dietary approach for your furry friend's specific needs.
