Chamomile flower (Matricaria recutita L.) has been widely used as a herbal medicine because of its wide therapeutic effect. The main constituents of the essential oil are α-bisabolol and chamazulene derived from matricin, a non-volatile proazulene. The flowers also contain flavonoid derivatives such as apigenin and apigenin-7-glucoside. It has been shown in clinical studies that chamomile flower helps to relieve skin irritations, inflammation and itching as well as helps to promote wound healing. The α-bisabolol also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Chamomile flower has been used successfully as an oral or topical therapy either alone or in combination with other herbs. Chamomile is very safe for both internal and external use.
